State deer scoreboard: antlered bucks, age structure, antlerless harvest and hunters, 2021 to 2024 seasons
Antlered buck harvest, the age of those bucks, antlerless harvest and deer hunters for every state in the scoreboard, as each state wildlife agency reported them to the National Deer Association. Five findings, the figures behind them and a CSV you can use without a login.
The sortable scoreboard and the county rows are for Lab members. The CSV and this page are open to everyone.
What the figures show
Antlered bucks harvested, all reporting states
Reporting states took 3,169,373 antlered bucks in 2021 (45 states), 3,134,205 in 2022 (45 states), 3,202,100 in 2023 (43 states) and 3,183,057 in 2024 (44 states).
Each total adds up only the states that reported that season. 43 of 48 states reported every season shown.
Antlered bucks per square mile, 2024
Of the 48 states in the scoreboard, 44 reported antlered bucks per square mile for 2024; the five highest were Pennsylvania (3.9), Maryland (3.3), Louisiana (3), South Carolina (3) and Wisconsin (3).
Bucks 3.5 years and older, 2024
Of the 48 states in the scoreboard, 21 reported the age of the antlered harvest for 2024; the five with the highest share of bucks 3.5 years old and older were Oklahoma (81%), Mississippi (80%), Louisiana (75%), Texas (70%) and Arkansas (67%).
Biggest changes, 2023 to 2024
Of the 43 states that reported both 2023 and 2024, antlered harvest rose most in Florida (+21%), Delaware (+20%), Minnesota (+17%), Wyoming (+13%) and Montana (+11%) and fell most in Washington (-74%), Idaho (-51%), North Dakota (-29%), Michigan (-24%) and Kansas (-18%).
Deer hunters and bow share, 2024
42 of 48 states reported deer hunters for 2024, and the five with the most were Texas (765,180), Pennsylvania (621,600), Wisconsin (604,007), Michigan (603,737) and New York (536,720); 39 reported bow hunters as a share of deer hunters, and the five with the highest bow share were Ohio (82%), Florida (71%), Illinois (70%), Massachusetts (70%) and Delaware (66%).
A blank value means the state did not report it. A blank antlered harvest for California, Nevada or Utah means no white-tailed deer are hunted there.
