The CWD Epicenter: Wisconsin's Southern Herd at the Threshold

Wisconsin's chronic wasting disease is not a statewide problem evenly spread. It is a southern one that has become a national warning. The Southern Farmland zone holds roughly 87% of the state's positives, adult-buck prevalence in the southwest exceeds 30%, and long-running Wisconsin research puts the tipping point for herd decline at about 29% female prevalence. The disease is now edging north, and that front is the forward risk.

Where Wisconsin's CWD actually is

Wisconsin's CWD map is lopsided. The Southern Farmland zone (the rich agricultural country of the state's south and southwest, its highest-density deer range) carries the overwhelming majority of the state's positives, on the order of 87%. The disease was first found there in 2002, in Iowa, Dane, and Grant counties, and two decades of intensive testing have tracked it saturating that core while the northern forest zones stay comparatively clean. Any honest read of Wisconsin CWD is really a read of a few dozen southern counties.

What infection does to a deer's odds

The reason prevalence matters is mortality. A long-running Wisconsin study fitted 766 adult deer with GPS collars and tracked their fate by infection status. The gap is stark: a healthy doe has about an 83% chance of surviving the year; an infected doe, 41%. A healthy buck sits at 69%; an infected buck, just 17%. Infection roughly quarters a buck's odds. CWD is not a slow background attrition in these counties — for an infected animal it is close to a death sentence within a season or two.

A healthy buck sees next season two times in three. An infected one, barely one time in six. That is the engine underneath the prevalence numbers.

Where prevalence tips into population decline

The same research identified a line: once CWD prevalence among adult females passes roughly 29%, the herd is expected to stop replacing itself and begin to shrink — infected does simply do not survive long enough to raise enough fawns. That number reframes the southwestern prevalence figures. Adult-buck prevalence over 30% in the core counties means the disease is no longer a monitoring statistic there; it is at or past the level where researchers expect the population itself to turn down. Southern Wisconsin is the closest thing North America has to a real-world test of what unmanaged CWD does to a deer herd at scale.

Where the next decade of the problem is

The forward story is geographic. Recent seasons brought La Crosse County its first case and Clark County its first wild detections, alongside new positives in Oneida, Portage, and Wood: counties on the northern and central edge of the farmland zone, closer to the big forest blocks that have so far stayed clean. The northern forest is lower-density deer country, which slows transmission, but every new detection there is the disease testing the boundary. The counties to watch for the 2030s are not the saturated southwest; they are the transition band where the front is now.

For the southern herd, and for the hunter

For a southern-Wisconsin hunter, the practical reality is a herd carrying a heavy, permanent disease load, which is why the state leans on liberal, sometimes unlimited, antlerless harvest there: reducing density is the only lever that slows transmission. For the hunter deciding where to invest a season, the prevalence gradient is real information: the closer to the southwest core, the higher the odds that a given deer is infected and the more the herd is under structural pressure. None of this is a reason to stop hunting the farmland zone, which still holds Wisconsin's best deer numbers; it is a reason to follow the state's testing and carcass guidance, and to read the density-reduction rules as the management response they are.
