The Rut Moves South: What Ohio's Weekly Data Says About Timing

Whitetail rut timing is supposed to drift a little with latitude: north a touch earlier, south a touch later. It is one of the most repeated claims in deer hunting and one of the hardest to actually see, because almost no state publishes harvest by week. Ohio does. Splitting the state's mandatory weekly archery kill into its Lake Erie counties and its Ohio River counties, the drift is there: the northern band's harvest centers about one to three days earlier, in the same direction, three seasons running. It is also small: the peak week is identical top to bottom. This is a paper about a real, modest signal, and about why Ohio is the only Midwest state that can even show it to you.

Key findings
  • Across ~150 miles of latitude, Ohio's northern (Lake Erie) counties concentrate their archery harvest 1.4 to 2.9 days earlier than the southern (Ohio River) counties: the same direction in all three seasons measured (2023, 2024, 2025).
  • The shift is real but small: the single peak week is identical in both bands (mid-November). The difference is in the balance around it: the south carries a visibly fatter late-November tail (in 2024, 22.9% of its archery kill in week 7 vs 18.8% in the north).
  • This is a latitude effect, not a weather fluke: the north-earlier ordering repeats every season despite different weather years, which is the signature of a structural (photoperiod-linked) driver rather than noise.
  • No other Midwest state can produce this comparison. It requires county harvest reported weekly, in season — which requires mandatory telecheck. Only Ohio has it; survey states publish a single annual number with no timing at all.

Why timing hides from the harvest record

That the rut runs slightly earlier at higher latitudes is a reasonable expectation — breeding is cued by photoperiod, and the biology should shift with the calendar of daylight. The problem is measurement. To see a timing shift in the harvest you need harvest resolved by week, not by season, and resolved by place fine enough to separate north from south. Virtually every state fails one test or both: they report one annual total per county, or they estimate harvest by survey with no in-season cadence at all. Ohio is the exception. Its mandatory telecheck yields a weekly, county-level tally, and because the archery season runs underneath the whole calendar, the archery kill in October and November is a clean read on when hunters (and the deer they are hunting) are moving. FDR split Ohio's 88 counties into two bands: the thirteen along Lake Erie and the northern border, and the twelve along the Ohio River, roughly 2.5° of latitude apart, and compared their weekly archery curves.

IITHE SIZE OF THE SHIFT

Days, not weeks — but the same direction every year

The honest way to summarize a timing curve is its center of mass: the harvest-weighted average week. Do that for each band and the north comes in earlier every season: by 0.24 of a week in 2023, 0.42 in 2024, and 0.20 in 2025. Translated to the calendar, the northern archery kill centers roughly one and a half to three days earlier than the southern. That is the whole effect. It is not a different rut (the modal peak week is the same in both bands); it is a modest lean, a few days of head start in the north and a few days of holdover in the south. What makes it credible is not its magnitude but its consistency: three seasons with different weather, different mast crops, and different opener calendars, and the ordering never flips. Noise does not line up like that.

The rut does move south: by about two days across the state of Ohio. That is a real number, and it is small enough that only weekly, county-level data could ever have caught it.

IIIWHAT NOT TO DO WITH IT

A two-day signal is not a rut map

It is tempting to inflate a finding like this into a color-coded, multi-state rut-timing map. FDR will not, because the data will not carry it. The shift measured here is a within-Ohio, band-to-band average of a few days; it is at the very edge of what even 88 counties of weekly data can resolve, and it is confounded by hunter behavior (weekends, weather, holidays, mast) that also moves the archery kill around. Extending it across state lines would be worse than imprecise: it would be fabrication, because no neighboring state publishes the weekly county harvest that would be needed to place it on the same axis. The defensible claim is narrow and we will keep it narrow: inside one mandatory-check state, over three seasons, the northern archery harvest centers about two days ahead of the southern. That is the finding. Anything painted beyond Ohio's borders is decoration, not data.

IVWHY ONLY OHIO CAN SHOW THIS

The measurement is a byproduct of mandatory telecheck

The reason this comparison exists at all is regulatory, not biological. Ohio requires every deer to be checked in season, so the state can publish a running county tally on a weekly schedule. And a weekly county tally is exactly the instrument a latitude-timing question needs. The Midwest's survey states (harvest estimated after the season from a hunter questionnaire, stratified by management unit) cannot produce a weekly curve for a single county, let alone contrast two bands of them; the timing information simply is not in the data they collect. So the practical takeaway is two-sided. For the hunter: expect the archery rut to run a hair earlier as you move toward Lake Erie and a hair later toward the Ohio River: days, not weeks, and worth knowing only at the margin. For anyone weighing which state's data actually answers timing questions: it is the one that made hunters check their deer while the season was still on. The signal is small. The reason it is visible at all is the whole point.
