The East Bench Really Does Win the Morning

After a cold front, the advice is to look for gobblers on the east and southeast benches, because that is where the first morning sun lands and a bird that shivered through a clear April night has a reason to want it. It is repeated in every turkey article ever written, and it is almost never tested, because testing it requires knowing, for every bench on a piece of ground, whether the terrain across the draw lets the sunrise reach it before the birds come down. We built that measurement for one Illinois county. The rule holds: in Edgar County, 95.8% of east and southeast benches are in direct sun by fly-down, half the west and north benches are still in shade, and east benches bank a third more sunlight in the first two hours. The lore is right. What the number adds is the size of the edge, and the one place the rule frays.

Key findings
  • On an early-April morning in Edgar County, direct sun reaches 95.8% of east and southeast-facing benches by fly-down, taken as sunrise plus thirty minutes. The east-bench rule is not folklore; it is what the terrain does.
  • The contrast is the far side. Only 50% of west- and north-facing benches are in sun at the same moment. Across the first two hours after sunrise, east and southeast benches collect a median 2.0 hours of direct sun against 1.5 hours on west and north benches: a 33% morning-sun edge.
  • The rule frays where you would expect, and the data shows how much. Cancellation rises from 3.3% on gentle benches (4–8° of slope) to 5.3% (8–15°) to 8.4% on the steepest (15° and up), where an opposing ridge finally stands tall enough to hold the sun off an east face.
  • This is gentle east-central Illinois farmland with shallow drainages. In genuinely cut terrain the exception bites harder, because the opposing ridges are taller. The method travels; the specific 4% is a reading off one county.

IA rule almost nobody has measured

The biology is sound; the inference from it is not tested

The biology behind the advice is sound. A roosting turkey loses heat through a clear calm night, most of it on the exposed limbs it prefers and most of all on the still nights that follow a spring front. Sun is the cheapest warmth available in the hour after fly-down, and any hunter who has watched a flock drift to a lit edge on a frozen morning has seen the pull firsthand.

The part that goes untested is the leap from birds want early sun to therefore hunt the east bench. That leap quietly assumes the sunrise arrives everywhere at once, the way it does on open prairie. In cut ground it does not. The sun clears the published horizon at one time and clears the actual ridge across the draw at another, and on a specific bench those two moments can be a long way apart. Every outlet asserts the rule; none of them can tell you which benches it fails on, because that answer lives in the terrain around each one.

IIWhat we measured, and where

The horizon each bench actually sees, minute by minute

For Edgar County we have, for every 9-meter cell, the elevation the surrounding terrain occupies on 24 compass bearings: the horizon each spot actually sees. Combine that with the sun's track on an early-April morning and you can answer, cell by cell and minute by minute, a plain question. Is direct sun reaching this bench yet, or is it still behind the ridge?

On April 8 the sun breaks the flat horizon at Edgar's latitude around 6:31 local, rising nearly due east and slightly south (a compass bearing of about 81 degrees) and climbing to roughly 23 degrees of elevation over the next two hours. We take fly-down as sunrise plus thirty minutes, walk the sun across that window in five-minute steps, and at each step mark every bench sunlit or shaded by comparing the sun's height to the terrain horizon in its exact direction. Keeping only real slopes of four degrees or more, so the comparison is bench against bench rather than bench against bottomland, left roughly 484,000 east and southeast benches and 450,000 west and north ones to score.

Half the west and north benches in the county are still in shade when the birds are hitting the ground. Half the east ones were lit before legal light.

IIIThe rule holds, and the number is the point

A third more morning sun on the bench the lore told you to hunt

The east-bench rule survives contact with the data cleanly. Direct sun reaches 95.8% of east and southeast benches by fly-down. Put the other way, fewer than one in twenty is shaded at the moment it matters, and those are the steep exceptions covered below. The far side is where the contrast lives: at the same fly-down moment, only 50% of west- and north-facing benches are in sun.

Extend the clock to the first two hours after sunrise and the gap becomes a budget you can hold in your hand. East and southeast benches collect a median two hours of direct sun in that window; west and north benches a median hour and a half. A third more morning sun on the bench the lore told you to hunt. The full spread is worth seeing, because it is what makes this a scouting tool and not a slogan: the sunniest east benches bank the entire two-hour window, while the dimmest west and north benches, the bottom tenth, get under fifty minutes.

IVWhere it breaks, measured

The exception is real, and it is a steepness story

An honest myth-check reports the exception with a number, not a shrug. The east-bench rule frays on steep ground, and the data says exactly how much. Sort the east and southeast benches by steepness: on the gentle ones, 4 to 8 degrees, only 3.3% are shaded past fly-down. On 8-to-15-degree benches that rises to 5.3%. On the steepest, 15 degrees and up, it reaches 8.4%, roughly one in twelve.

This is the physical picture behind the lore's fine print, and it is also the real boundary on the result. Edgar County is shallow ground, and its 4% cancellation is a shallow-ground number. Carry the same method to deeper draws with taller opposing ridges and the exception grows: the east bench you picked off aspect alone is likelier to sit in cold shade while the birds are down. That is precisely the terrain where checking the horizon, not just the compass, earns its keep. The method is the product; the county-specific percentage is a reading off one county.

VWhat a hunter does with it

The map work the night before

Less changes about the hunt than you might hope, and that is the honest part. You still roost birds at dusk, still set up in the dark, still hunt the bird in front of you. The gain is in the map work the night before. On a cold, clear, post-front morning the read is simple and now it is quantified: favor the east and southeast benches, expect the west and north ones to run cold well past fly-down, and on steep ground do not trust the compass alone, because a tall ridge across the draw can shade even an east face into the first hour.

As April warms, the whole edge fades. Sun angles climb, ridges shade less, and mornings lose the chill that made the sun worth chasing, which leaves this a cold-morning read with a short shelf life inside the season. And as with every terrain layer FDR publishes, it describes the ground rather than the bird. A sunlit bench is a place a cold turkey has a reason to want. It is not a place a turkey is.

Terrain-only is the correct surface for a leaf-off spring morning, when the bare canopy is largely transparent to low sun.
  2. Solar position computed analytically for the county centroid on day-of-year 98 (April 8); local geometric sunrise ≈ 06:31. Fly-down is taken as sunrise + 30 minutes; the morning window is the first 120 minutes, stepped every 5 minutes.
  3. A bench is sunlit at a step when solar elevation exceeds the terrain horizon interpolated to the sun's azimuth. Benches are restricted to slope ≥ 4°. Aspect bands: east/southeast 67.5–157.5°, west/north 247.5–337.5° (compass).
  4. A cardinal-orientation test fixture was required to pass before any figure here was recorded. Aspect sign convention and the horizon-azimuth lookup were each tested against synthetic planes of known facing. A morning-only, east-favoring window is the exact condition under which an east/west mirror error would produce a confident and entirely backwards result, and magnitude checks alone do not catch that class of bug.
