The On-Ramp: Captive Deer and the 69-County Watch List
Chronic wasting disease travels two ways: on the deer, slowly, and on us, quickly. The clearest fingerprint of the fast route is in the national record of where the disease turns up in captive deer-farming facilities versus where it turns up in wild herds. Fifty-eight percent of the counties with a captive-facility detection also carry wild CWD. The other forty-two percent (sixty-nine counties) have a known infected facility and no wild detection yet. That list is the closest thing hunting has to a leading indicator.
- USGS records 269 captive-facility CWD detections across 166 counties in 22 states, against 593 wild-herd detections in 36 states.
- 58% of captive-CWD counties (97 of 166) also carry wild CWD. The two maps overlap far more than chance would produce.
- The remaining 69 counties have an infected captive facility but no confirmed wild case yet: a national watch list led by Texas (19), Minnesota (9), and Wisconsin (5).
- Pennsylvania is the cautionary tale: captive detections in Bedford (17), Fulton (11), and Blair (8) sit inside what is now one of the East's worst wild-CWD fronts.
ITwo ways to travel
Left to deer, CWD moves at the speed of dispersal: a few miles a year, along contiguous range. The captive-cervid industry moves animals by truck, across state lines, on a schedule. When a disease of a slow, home-bodied animal keeps appearing in disconnected pockets far from any front, the transport network is doing the work. The national captive-versus-wild record is the cleanest available read on how much of the CWD map was drawn by deer and how much by us.
IIWhere the maps overlap
Overlay the two layers and they agree far more than coincidence allows: 97 of the 166 counties with a captive-facility detection also have wild CWD: 58%. Correlation is not a chain of custody, and in some counties the wild disease surely came first. But the concentration is its own evidence: the counties that farmed deer and caught CWD in the pen are, more often than not, the same counties now fighting it in the woods.
IIIThe watch list
The counties that should worry a hunter most are the ones where the two maps disagree: a known infected facility, no wild case on record. There are 69 of them, and they cluster where deer farming is densest. Texas alone accounts for 19; Minnesota nine; Wisconsin five. If the captive route is real (and Pennsylvania says it is), these are the counties where the wild disease is most likely to surface next.

IVThe limits of the signal
Two cautions keep this honest. First, “no wild detection” is not proof of a clean herd. It can mean no one has tested hard enough, and surveillance effort varies enormously by state. Second, a facility detection near wild CWD does not prove the facility caused it; the arrow can point either way. What the list does do is rank counties by a real, physical risk factor that ordinary range-based maps ignore. It is a place to aim testing and attention, not a forecast with a date on it.
Ohio makes the point concretely. The state runs an active, mandatory-sampling surveillance zone across nine northwest counties: a real, resourced response, not a paper exercise. But it is a geographic buffer built around counties with already-confirmed wild cases, not a response to captive-facility risk: Ohio's own two captive-only counties on this list, Holmes and Wayne, sit entirely outside that zone and draw no extra testing at all. The state's surveillance map and the captive-risk map are answering two different questions, and a hunter checking only the official zone would have no way to know the second one exists.
