Leaf-Off Aerial Imagery: What Winter Photos Reveal
Open your hunting app and your ground is usually a flat, uniform summer canopy — a "mat of green" that reads a mature oak flat and a briar-choked clearcut as the same shade. Worse, that photo is often years old, sending you to hunt timber that has already been cut. This guide explains what leaf-off winter imagery puts back on the map, how to audit how old your basemap really is, and why FDR serves dated winter aerials as a standard layer.

That is not a feature request. It is a hunter telling you the single most important scouting layer on his map is working against him. Odds are you are staring at a summer canopy shot from who-knows-what year, blurred into what hunters keep calling a "mat of green." It is pretty, and it is hiding almost everything you actually need to see.
- Summer canopy erases your best sign. In leaf-on imagery a mature oak flat and a five-year-old regen jungle read as the same green. Timber-type changes, interior edges, cedar thickets, trail networks, and hidden openings all vanish under the mat.
- Leaf-on is only half of your basemap problem — the other half is that it's often years old. Aggregator-fed apps leave a stitched imagery layer in place because refreshing it is expensive; a block logged in 2019 can still render as standing timber in 2026. Stale imagery sends you to hunt places that no longer exist.
- Leaf-off winter imagery is a scouting cheat code. Bare ground, low sun, and hard shadows draw the edges, separate timber types by color, and throw every trail and bench into relief — the exact features that drive where deer bed, browse, and travel.
ITHE MAT-OF-GREEN PROBLEM
Full-canopy imagery is shot in June, July, and August — peak leaf-on. Every hardwood, cedar, and wall of briars wears the same green coat, so from above a mature oak flat and a five-year-old clearcut choked with blackberry read as the exact same shade. The green mat swallows timber-type changes (oaks, maples, pines, and cedars blur into one color), the soft interior edges where deer move in daylight, old clearcuts and regen that are now eye-level browse and bedding, cedar thickets that are the nastiest bedding on the property, the actual trail network, and small interior openings — the food and staging pockets a mile from the nearest field.
This is why so many hunters end up buying a drone and paying per-area processing fees just to see their own dirt from above in the fall. People are spending real money on hardware and cloud processing to get a picture their premium app should already give them. The picture exists — winter aerials get flown every year — it just is not the one the big mapping apps load by default.
Picture the two versions of the same forty-acre parcel side by side. On the summer basemap it is a uniform green mat: no visible edges, no trails, one undifferentiated block of "timber." On a leaf-off winter photo of the identical ground, the hardwoods go bare and gray, a dark-green cedar thicket pops in the corner, two deer trails thread the drainage, and a clearly visible interior opening appears. Same ground, same acreage — the green mat is what most apps show you; the winter photo is where the deer actually live.
IIHOW OLD IS YOUR IMAGERY?
Now the part nobody wants to admit. Aggregator-fed apps pull a stitched-together imagery layer and leave it in place for a long time, because refreshing it is expensive and most users never notice. So you can be looking at a photo half a decade old and have no idea. Hunters have caught this the hard way: a clearcut logged in 2019 still rendering as standing timber on a paid app years later.
Think about what that does to your season. You scout from the couch, see a beautiful block of mature woods on a ridge point, and pattern a plan around hunting that timber. You walk in opening morning and hit a wall of eight-foot briars and greenbrier so thick you cannot see your boots. The trees got cut; your map never got the memo. You just burned a morning — and blew out the spot — hunting a photograph of a forest that no longer exists. Stale imagery does not just cost you detail; it sends you to hunt places that are not there anymore.
IIIAUDIT YOUR BASEMAP AGE
Before you make a single stand decision off aerial imagery, run this check. It takes about two minutes.
- Find the capture date — and if you can't, that's your answer. Good imagery tells you when it was flown. If your app hides the date or won't show it, assume it is old. Transparency about age is the whole game.
- Check a known landmark you've watched change. A new outbuilding, a road realignment, a house that went up two years ago, a field that got tiled. If the recent change is not on the map, the map predates it.
- Look for cut lines and log landings. Zoom to any timber you know has been worked. If a logged block still shows full canopy, the imagery is older than the cut — and everything else on it is suspect too.
- Read the shadows and the leaves. Long shadows and bare canopy mean a winter or shoulder-season flight (good). Short shadows and full green mean high summer — the mat.
- Cross-check the season against the sign you need. If you are hunting edges, thickets, and timber transitions, a leaf-on image literally cannot show them. Wrong season is the same as wrong data.
- Confirm it against fresh boundary data. Old imagery often rides along with old ownership data. A basemap and a parcel layer that are both two years stale will happily agree with each other and both be wrong.
If your map fails two or more of these, stop scouting off it. You are planning around a memory, not the ground.
IVWHAT LEAF-OFF PUTS BACK
Leaf-off imagery is flown after the hardwoods drop and before green-up — bare ground, low sun, hard shadows. Timber edges snap into focus: the line between hardwoods and conifers, between mature timber and regen, between woods and brush draws itself when the leaves are gone. Timber types separate by color and texture — bare gray oak ridges, dark cedar draws, feathery brushy cuts — so you can read forest composition instead of guessing. Trails and travel corridors appear as bare ground and low winter sun throw every worn path and two-track into relief. Thickets and screening cover reveal themselves: that dark, dense blob still green in January is cedar and bedding, and now you can distance it from access and plan an entry that does not blow it out.
Micro-terrain also reads cleaner. With the canopy stripped, subtle benches, draws, and points show through in the imagery — and they line up with what your topo is telling you. That is where leaf-off aerials and a good elevation model become a team.
Picture an annotated winter orthophoto of a single property with the callouts labeled: a timber-type change where oak gives way to cedar, an old clearcut that is now a bedding thicket, an interior opening for staging, the main trail coming off a bench, and a wall of screening cover. Everything the summer mat hides, labeled — one image, one property, in leaf-off. Try finding any of it on a green July basemap. Winter imagery isn't prettier — it's more useful: it shows the exact features that drive where deer bed, browse, and travel.
