Designing Food Plots and Property Layouts on a Map
Under every property-design video are the same two comments: which drawing app is that, and — the one that matters — where does a food plot actually go so it helps deer without wrecking your hunt? This guide answers both by walking a real anonymized west-central Illinois parcel through the layers a designer actually uses: LIDAR funnels, leaf-off cover edges, bedding zones, neighbor context, and a scent-risk screen. The tool is just a map with the right layers turned on — the layers are the trick.
"How does one choose where to make a food plot so it does the best good and has no negative impacts on how I can hunt the land?"
That comment sits under every habitat-design video, and it never gets a straight answer. Not "what does the consultant charge," not "what seed is best" — where does the plot go on the map, and does it make your hunting or break it? The people you're watching aren't using a secret app. They're using a hunting map with the right layers turned on, and reading the ground underneath. Here is that process on a real parcel, so you can copy it on your own ground tonight.
- The plot's job is defined by the neighbor's ground, not yours. Bedding cover next door makes you a staging pause on the travel route; a food desert next door makes you the destination. Same parcel, opposite design.
- Flat farm country hides its terrain — LIDAR shows the funnel. The plot belongs at the pinch where a draw, bench, or saddle concentrates travel, not the open middle that "looks nice" on an aerial.
- Bedding is a probability zone, not a pin. Anyone selling an exact bedding X on flat ground is faking a precision the landscape doesn't have. Design downwind-accessible from the zone.
- Access is a scent-risk problem, not a wind arrow. No tool predicts the swirling wind at your stand. Terrain — low ground, drainages, lee edges — tells you where scent pools; route your entry around those traps.
- Size to the browse pressure or watch it vanish. A half-acre under 6-8 deer a night is a dirt patch by opening week. County herd and harvest timing tell you which situation you're in before you drop seed.
ITHE PARCEL AND ITS LAYERS
The example is a 78-acre permission parcel in west-central Illinois: two-thirds tillable, a wooded creek finger down the east side, a brushy fencerow splitting the crop. The hunter has one budget and one question — put in one food plot that pulls deer in daylight without blowing them off the property. Pull it up and turn on the layers a designer actually uses: LIDAR hunt-topo to read the ground instead of guessing from a flat aerial; winter leaf-off aerial imagery so bare-canopy cover edges show, not a June green blob; bedding-cover zones where terrain and cover say deer are likely holding; and parcel ownership so you know exactly where your permission ends. Now you're designing against the ground and against the neighbors — the difference between a layout that works and a diagram that doesn't.
IIDESIGN AGAINST WHAT'S NEXT DOOR
The seed-bag marketing never tells you this: your plot's job is set by the neighbor's ground, not yours. On these 78 acres the county-level land pattern shows heavy standing row crop to the north and thick timber-and-CRP holding does to the south. That single fact decides everything. You don't need to grow groceries — the north side already grows a section of them. What this parcel lacks is a reason for deer to cross it in daylight on the way between southern bedding and northern feed. So the plot isn't a destination; it's a staging plot — a small, high-attraction green field on the travel route where a buck pauses and browses in the last light before he commits to the big field after dark.
Flip the neighbors and the answer flips. If the south were bedding and there were no ag for two miles north, now you want a bigger destination plot because you're the only food around. Same parcel, opposite design, entirely because of what's next door. A map that shows you the neighboring parcels and their cover is how you make that call instead of guessing — which is why FDR pulls neighboring-cover context into the plan rather than treating your outline as an island.
IIIREAD THE FUNNEL BEFORE THE SPOT
To the eye, flat farm country is a green rectangle. On LIDAR it's a subtle drainage, a two-foot bench along the creek, a low saddle in the fencerow where deer slip through — micro-features deer use religiously because they're the path of least resistance. On this parcel the LIDAR shows a shallow draw running out of the southern timber toward the crop, a natural highway, with a soft bench where that draw meets the fencerow. That bench, at the mouth of the funnel, is the plot location — not the open middle of the field where it "looks nice." The pinch. Picking these features out of flat ground is a learnable skill, and FDR's landform detection surfaces the candidate benches, saddles, and draws so you're confirming terrain, not hunting for it blind.

Notice the honest limit. The bedding layer shows a zone, not an X. Anyone selling you an exact bedding pin on flat farm ground is faking a precision the landscape doesn't have — deer shift bedding with wind, pressure, and season. A zone is the truth; a pin is a sales prop. Design your plot to sit downwind-accessible from the bedding zone, not to thread a needle to a dot someone drew.
IVENTRY AND EXIT ARE SCENT-RISK ZONES
Nobody can predict the swirling wind at your stand — you've watched a "north wind" curl and dump your scent straight into the bedding.
This is where most layouts quietly fail: the plot is perfect and the hunter blows it out on the third sit because there's no clean way in and out. Let's be blunt about wind, because the industry oversells it — the honest move isn't to sell you another confident arrow, it's to flag when and where the forecast arrow can't be trusted and design around the risk. The terrain tells you where scent pools and swirls: low ground, drainages, and the lee side of a cover edge are chronic scent-risk zones where air stalls and rolls no matter what the forecast says. On this parcel that southern draw is a beautiful deer highway and a scent trap — thermals slide down it at first light. So the access route does not follow the draw. It comes in from the northwest along the crop edge, on the high side, where your scent carries away from both the bedding zone and the plot approach.
There's a measured reason to be extra paranoid on the mornings you most want to hunt: forecast wind-arrow unreliability climbs from about 27% to 45% — roughly 1.7× — in exactly the calm, clear, cold conditions of a perfect late-season morning. The still air you love is the air the forecast is worst at. So on the map, before you plant a seed, you draw the route: a marked entry/exit path that keeps you out of the terrain scent-traps. If you can't draw a clean one, the plot is in the wrong place — move it. Access first, plot second. That's a sizing failure, not a seed one. A half-acre brassica plot with six to eight deer feeding nightly gets mowed to dirt before the season opens; you built a snack, not a food source, and now it's a bare patch during the exact weeks you needed it. Sizing is math, not vibes. Rough rule: a small high-preference plot only survives to season if local deer density is low, or you're using it purely as a staging pause next to a big neighboring ag field that absorbs the real feeding pressure. This is where county-level data earns its keep. If the county herd index around your saved area is high and it's shaping up as a "late" ag year — surrounding corn and beans coming off later, keeping natural food on the landscape longer — your small plot gets a reprieve. High-density county with an early harvest, and every deer in the section funnels onto your green square the week you planted it. Knowing which situation you're in before you drop seed is the difference between a plot and a dirt patch.
The other unfilmed failure is skipping the dirt. You'll be told endlessly that the seed is the variable — new coating, new blend, new proprietary whatever. The unglamorous truth every actual designer knows: the dirt decides. A cheap county-extension soil test tells you your pH and what nutrients you're missing; fix the pH with lime and you'll roughly double a bargain generic blend's production, ignore it and the most expensive bag on the shelf grows the same stunted, unpalatable crop. The soil test is the highest-return move in the whole project and it costs less than a single bag of the seed everyone's arguing about. We're not naming a blend, on purpose — the blend is the last decision and the least important one. Get location, access, size, and soil right and "which seed" becomes a rounding error.
VIRUN THE CHECKLIST
Replace the contradictory video-and-book doctrine with a fixed order of operations. Run it top to bottom before you commit a plot, and let the map do the reading underneath each step.
- What do the neighbors grow or hold? Bedding next door means you're a destination; big ag next door means you're a staging pause. Design accordingly.
- Where's the funnel? Turn on LIDAR. Find the draw, bench, or saddle that concentrates travel — the plot goes at the pinch, not the pretty middle.
- Which bedding ZONE feeds it? Position downwind-accessible from the zone. If someone hands you an exact bedding pin, distrust it.
- Can you draw a clean entry/exit that avoids the terrain scent-traps? If not, move the plot. Access first — and assume the forecast arrow lies worst on calm, clear, cold mornings.
- Will it survive the browse pressure? Match plot size to local density and the county's harvest timing. A half-acre under 6-8 deer a night is a wipeout, not a plot.
- Did you soil test? Before seed. Non-negotiable.
- Now — and only now — pick a seed. It's the smallest decision on the list.
