Deer Movement Scores vs. What the Collar Studies Support

A single number at the top of the screen — 99%, five stars, a green dial — claims to collapse weather, rut timing, food, terrain, and one buck's 2 a.m. decision into a score for your exact tree. This guide lays out what two decades of GPS-collar data actually support, why the moon-phase math underneath most movement scores has no usable signal, and where an honest desk draws the line between real evidence and voodoo.

A hunter staring at his phone in the dark, coffee going cold, reading a little dial that told him the day was a lock: "On days like today when the app says 99% chance of deer movement, it is 100% Wrong!" You have lived both sides of it — sat a "99%" morning and watched squirrels, then thrown a Hail Mary on a "Poor" day and had your best buck walk under the stand at 8:40. This is the piece the rest of our guides point back to, because it is the thing we believe hardest: show the evidence, and refuse to fake what isn't knowable.

  • The percent score is a confidence trick, not a forecast. One scalar cannot honestly collapse weather, pressure, rut timing, food, terrain, and an individual deer's personality into a number that applies to your exact tree — the inputs that drive daytime movement are either unmeasurable at your stand or too local for a county-wide feed to see.
  • Moon phase has no there there. Two decades of GPS collars — the best window into deer movement ever assembled — show essentially no usable predictive signal for daytime movement from lunar phase or position. What moves the needle is boring: cold fronts, falling temperature, the rut calendar, pressure, and local food and cover.
  • When a score is right, it is riding weather you already saw. Strip a movement score down and most of what's left is a temperature drop and a rut-calendar date you can read off a free forecast and a wall calendar. Redundant on its good days, confidently wrong on its bad ones.

Why the percent score feels right and forecasts nothing

Think about what that one number is quietly claiming. It collapses weather, pressure, rut timing, food, terrain, the personality of the specific deer you're after, and whatever a buck decided to do at 2 a.m. into a single scalar for your exact stand. No honest model does that, because the inputs that actually drive daytime movement are either unmeasurable where you sit or so local that a county-wide feed can't see them.

So why does it feel right sometimes? Same reason a horoscope does. When it says "great" and you see deer, you remember it. When it says "great" and you don't, you blame the wind, the acorns, or the guy who slammed his truck door. When it says "poor" and you smoke one, you call yourself lucky. The score is unfalsifiable in your own memory — a mirror that flatters whatever happened. That's not a forecast.

"Some of my best hunts were mornings when it was 'okay' and some of my worst were on days it was supposed to be 'great.'"

IITHE MOON HAS NO SIGNAL

The load-bearing wall under most scores, and it doesn't hold

This is the wall under most movement scores, so it deserves a straight answer. Whitetails have worn GPS collars for two decades now — thousands of them, across the range, logging locations every few minutes for years at a stretch. If the moon were secretly conducting the orchestra of daytime activity, this is exactly the dataset that would catch it red-handed.

It doesn't catch it. When researchers line up daytime movement against lunar phase and lunar position, the honest summary is that there is essentially no usable predictive signal for daytime movement. Whatever tiny effects appear are small, inconsistent between studies, wash out against ordinary day-to-day variation, and are not something you can trade a hunting morning on. The things that do move the needle are the ones you already respect: cold fronts and falling temperature, the calendar creeping toward the rut, hunting pressure, and the deer's own local food and cover.

An app that downranks a hard-frost pre-rut morning to 5% "solely because of the moon phase" isn't reading the research. It's reading a legend hunters have repeated since before there were satellites, dressing it in a percentage, and selling it back. We are not being contrarian to sell you a different magic number — we're telling you the magic number can't exist, and we'd rather lose that sale than fake it.

IIITHE APP ISN'T DOING THE WORK

When it's right, it's the weather and you

Ask whether movement apps work and the honest answer is that the app isn't doing the work — the weather is, and you are. On a sharp cold front in the first week of November, deer move, the app says "great," and it takes the credit for a thing you could read yourself. On a warm, still mid-October afternoon, deer sit tight and the app says "poor," again riding weather you already saw.

The problem isn't that the apps are always wrong. It's that when they're right, they're right for reasons you didn't need an app to know, and when they're wrong, they're confidently, specifically, 99%-to-your-face wrong. A tool that's redundant on its good days and misleading on its bad days is not a tool. It's a horoscope with a weather feed.

IVTHE HONEST LEDGER

Sort every signal into evidence or voodoo — strictly

So burn the dial. What's left? Actually a lot — as long as you're strict about the line between evidence and voodoo. Here is how we sort it: the signals that are real and checkable go on the map, and the ones nobody can honestly score stay off it, on purpose.

Knowable — real evidence FDR puts on the map
  • Crop and harvest state, county level. Whether it's a late year around your saved areas — is the corn still standing across your county deep into the season, or did it come off early? That reshapes where deer feed and how they travel, and it's a checkable signal instead of a vibe.
  • County harvest analytics and a herd index. Roughly a dozen report types per county plus a deer-density index, so you're planning against what the state's own harvest record shows — not a feeling about "a good area."
  • Scent-RISK conditions. Not a wind prediction, a risk flag. Our own measurements show a forecast wind arrow's unreliability climbs from about 27% to 45% (roughly 1.7x) in exactly the calm, clear, cold "perfect morning" you were about to trust it on. Knowing when to distrust the arrow is a thing that's actually knowable.
  • Terrain and landforms. Benches, saddles, points, and draws detected off our own statewide 1-meter LIDAR — physical facts about the dirt that don't change with the moon.
  • Leaf-off cover. County winter aerial imagery, so you can see the actual cover structure the summer canopy was hiding.
Not honestly scorable — claim these and you're faking
  • A single percent "chance the deer move today." The one number this whole guide is about. It can't be done honestly for your stand, and we will never ship it.
  • Moon-phase magic. The collars looked. It's not there.
  • An exact bedding pin. We show bedding-cover zones — areas of probability the terrain and cover support. Anyone dropping a precise "X" on the buck's bed is selling precision that doesn't exist.
  • Exact wind direction at your stand. Nobody can predict the swirl in that specific bowl at 7 a.m. So we flag the risk instead of selling you another arrow.

Picture the contrast the whole category rests on. On one side, a generic phone screen with a giant "99%" movement dial and a tiny moon icon — what the app implies it knows. On the other, the FDR map showing county corn-state, a herd-index number, a shaded bedding-cover zone rather than a pin, and an amber scent-RISK flag lit on a calm, clear, cold morning — what's actually knowable. One pretends to grade your morning; the other lays out the layers underneath the decision and lets you make it.

The percent dial collapses everything into one number you can't check, leaning on moon phase the collar data doesn't support. The honest alternative is the stack of layers that are real and checkable — and a refusal to score what isn't knowable.

The ledger is the product, and the promise

That ledger is the product, and it's also a line in the ground: Fully Drawn Research will never ship a black-box percent movement score. Not in v1, not when a competitor's marketing team dares us, not ever. The day we bolt a horoscope dial onto the top of the screen is the day we've become the thing this guide exists to warn you about.

Instead of one number that pretends to know your morning, you get the layers underneath the decision: county crop and harvest state, harvest analytics and a herd index, LIDAR terrain and landforms, leaf-off cover, bedding-cover zones, and a scent-risk flag honest about its own uncertainty. You're an adult who's killed deer on "Poor" days — you don't need a dial to hold your hand. You need the evidence laid out clean, and a tool with the spine to tell you when something isn't knowable.

Stop grading your mornings against a horoscope. Pull up your county in Scout with Founders access, turn on the county crop/harvest layer and the LIDAR terrain, and check whether it's a late year around your saved ground — real signals you can actually plan on, with zero movement dials anywhere on the screen.

  1. The moon-phase summary reflects the general weight of published GPS-collar research on whitetail daytime movement: small, inconsistent effects that do not provide usable day-to-day predictive signal. It is a synthesis, not a single study result.
  2. Scent-flow output is a risk screen, not a wind-direction prediction. It combines public National Weather Service forecast data with FDR's static thermal-terrain layer derived from 1-meter LIDAR to flag higher-risk zones and hours.
  3. The 27%-to-45% figure is an FDR-measured result describing forecast wind-arrow unreliability under calm, clear, cold conditions relative to average conditions.
  4. Crop and harvest signals are provided at the county level, not field-by-field. Bedding output is a cover-based probability zone, not an exact location.
  5. Terrain, LIDAR, imagery, and harvest layers are available in the states FDR currently covers; coverage is expanding across the Midwest through 2026. Parcel and terrain layers inherit county-GIS and elevation-data accuracy and are not a survey.
  6. FDR does not sell or ship a percent "deer movement" score, and nothing here guarantees animal activity or hunting success.
